CSA Adventures – Week 1

One of my new year’s resolution’s this year was to sign up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). It seemed like a great way to force ensure we were eating plenty of fresh veggies, support local farmers, and widen our palate with veggies we would otherwise never eat. After doing some research, we decided to go with One Woman Farm. This past Friday was our first pick-up – I was really excited! Monster came along with me of course – he loves being outside so I figured he’d be thrilled to see a farm. We got to meet our farmstress along with some of her helpers. Monster seemed to enjoyed it – he really liked watching the farmstress drive around on a tractor. He’s really into large, mechanical equipment right now. I hear he’ll grow out of this fascination never. 😉

Anyway – without further ado, here’s the list of this week’s share:

  • OWF Salad Mix –Mix of lettuces, pea tendrils, and mizuna.
  • Braising Greens  – Mustard greens and tat soi.
  • Easter Egg Radishes – Red, purple, and white.
  • Garlic Scapes
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Kale
We got half a pound each of the OWF salad mix, the braising greens, and the spinach. We got a bunch each of the garlic scapes and radishes, and a HUGE head of lettuce.
We’ll definitely be eating plenty of greens now! 🙂 So far we’ve tried the OWF salad mix, the braising greens, the spinach, and the garlic scapes. And they’ve all been delicious!
I was especially excited to try the garlic scapes, as I’d read a lot about them recently and had never heard of them before. I chopped some up and cooked them with chicken and onions. The flavor seemed pretty mild. Not sure if I cooked them too long or just didn’t use enough.
Tomorrow I’m planning on making this kale pesto recipe  I saw over at SlowMama a couple of weeks ago and have been dying to make ever since! Can’t say I’ve ever had kale before – looking forward to trying it.
What’s your favorite kale recipe?
P.S. Sorry for the uncaptioned pictures – wordpress is not cooperating! The first picture is chicken with onions and garlic scapes on top of braising greens. The second picture is garlic scapes.
